Happy Spring dear ones,
What’s sparking joy in your life? Are there daffodils? Super blooms? Spring breaks? Family gatherings? New projects? New life?
Can I take a moment to share some of my joys with you?
This spring I have had many opportunities to create dance in collaboration with outstanding artists and in alignment with my values.
The American Himalayan Foundation commissioned SBDP to create and perform an energizing number for their Stop Girl Trafficking fundraising event. Female-power dream team Sue Li Jue, Frances Sedayao, Kimberly Valmore and I created a rousing Temptations-style cool and jazz hands hot “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves” number. We were honored to join Sen. Feinstein, Dr. Aruna Uprety, Kimberly Chambers, Siddharth Kara, Jon Krakauer, Erica Stone, and hundreds of other SGT rock stars in supporting the life-saving work of this organization.

Coming up…
I have several dates for you to put in your calendar!
On Friday April 26th I’ll be presented with the Della Davidson prize at the noon kick-off event for Bay Area Dance Week at Yerba Buena Gardens. I’m grateful to Della for her artistic legacy and so honored to have the committee recognize my work in this way. I share this award with the cast and collaborators of Spirit & Bones who were an intrinsic part of bringing this vision to life and I toast to YOU, my supporters, for making it possible. I hope you’ll come rejoice in the spring sunshine and celebrate dance and community with me.

Reserve your ticket now for BULBFEST, East Bay outdoor dance & art extravaganza! Sunday May 5th, noon – 4pm. KJ Dahlaw and I are creating a site-specific duet in conversation with the Bulb’s layered landfill history and surface landscape of trees, tall grasses, and teetering slabs of cement. It’s an exploration of the resilience of nature and the human body and an interrogation of the notions of safety in public spaces.
I’m thrilled to be teamed up with theatrical director Becca Wolff (Rocked By Women) to do choreography for a rock opera by The Kilbanes. Weightless weaves together myth with the Kilbanes’ celebrated indie rock sound to tell a story of sisterhood, love, betrayal, and rebirth. It is created by an awe-inspiring team, and shows run April 30 – May 12 at A.C.T.’s The Strand theater. Use code EARLYBIRD for a $15 ticket.

And finally, Joan Lazarus, Sue Li Jue, Jeni Leary, Julie Crothers and Clarissa Dyas are reuniting to perform an excerpt from 2017’s Homeward at Oakland Ballet’s East Bay Dances festival. Sunday June 2nd, 4pm at Laney College.
May your spring bring sparks of joy and jewels of delight.
In love, gratitude and DANCE,
Sarah Bush, Artistic Director
