A video message from Joan Lazarus — dancer, teacher, mentor
Dear friend of the arts,
I have received the gift of seeing the world through Sarah Bush’s heart and vision, and I have a feeling that if you’re reading this, you too have glimpsed a peek through those lenses of hers. And it’s likely, that you, like me, are sincerely committed to ensuring that art — especially this embodied art of DANCE — is present in the world.
So what can each of us do to make sure that this way of being in the world is supported, accessible to all, and contributes to the artistic and revolutionary path that Sarah is on, and that we understand and value?
Supporting the continued and ongoing work of Sarah Bush Dance Project is a way you can do that.
Sarah has been relentless and laser-focused throughout her career in so many ways that truly matter to me:
- artistic relevance
- social relevance
- cultural justice
- inclusion
- personal inquiry
- freedom and participation — the artists and audience are always invited to participate in ways that ring true for them
- respect — just look at the team of artists Sarah chooses to work with on each project
- collaboration — true collaboration, not just commissioningsurprise / the unexpected — Sarah is so interested in many many things
- building community and ensemble that transcends the project itself
Let’s face it, Sarah is going to continue making the art that inspires and touches us, includes us, and speaks to the world.
I want to take that ride with Sarah because it feels “right”, it feels connected, it feels challenging and pure and somehow decent and so very important at this time. Which for me, makes the work feel ancient and eternal and futuristic all at the same time.
What can each of us do from where we sit today to be part of SBDP’s future?
Support SBDP — after this bizarre period in our history, we want Sarah to still be making her work and building a community base from which to create. This may be the most uncomplicated thing you do in 2020.
