Arts In Action – Sarah & Nina perform in final BAC Residency event this Saturday 4-6pm
As summer is drawing to a close and we make the transitions back into fall, we feel the pitch increase as we slide toward the end of the year. This Saturday is the last of SBDP’s scheduled public events as part of our residency at Berkeley Art Center. If you’re in the Bay Area, I hope you’ll join us for this playful deep-dive into art interpretation and interaction with the creative process. Nina Wu and I will be performing and leading attendees through short, optional activities. Many of the artists from the current exhibit Queer Technology will also be there to guide us through the many dimensions of their work.

Curated by Elliot Anderson, the exhibit asks:
What are the political, economic and social ramifications of a cultural bias inscribed in the technologies we live and interact with everyday?
We are told that these technologies are neutral and transparent, designed to satisfy each individual’s desires. What if those desires are outside the norms encoded in software, hardware and delivery systems?
Queer Technology responds to these questions and others by inviting Bay Area LGBTQ artists to critique the norms and values assumed by the techno-sphere. Artists Rudy Lemcke, Colleen Jennings, Kara Stone, Lark VCR, and Aaron Reed create games, augmented virtual reality artworks, sound and music, sculpture, internet-based, video and performance, exposing us to other possibilities.

The summer has been full of joy for me. Getting to share the studio with our stunning cast of performers as we prepare for the October performances, has filled my heart. I am wowed by what I get to witness, learn and create with these incredible women.
With Anne Bluethenthal, Richelle Donigan, Joanna Haigood, Joan Lazarus, Elvia Marta, and Priscilla Regalado we’ve reflected on, “Who are the women who have shaped me?”
With Laura Elaine Rebecca Johnson, Ellis, Sue Li Jue, Frances Sedayao and Jane Schnorrenberg we’ve asked ourselves, “What am I committed to?”
And with Dominique Hargrove, Courtney Hope, Courtney King and Nina Wu we asked each other to “Describe the world you want to live in.”
The wisdom, perspective, passion, commitment, vision and creativity of these women is astounding. Patty Ann Farrell and I are playing with both light and darkness. Krystal Harfert is fashioning costume abstractions of trees, wolves, and birds. I can’t wait for you step into this world we are creating.
